In the book «Η Μόμο» by Michael Ende, the main character Momo is friends with a street sweeper. The street sweeper doesn’t talk a lot, but when he does it is with a very philosophical tone.

He says

Ξέρεις, Μόμο…τα πράγματα είναι έτσι: έχεις καμιά φορά μπροστά σου έναν πολύ μεγάλο δρόμο. Σκέφτεσαι τι μακρύς που είναι, σκέφτεσαι πως ποτέ σου δε θα τα καταφέρεις.

Later, he adds

Δεν κάνει να σκέφτεσαι ολόκληρο τον δρόμο, κατάλαβες; Πρέπει να σκέφτεσαι μονάχα το επόμενο βήμα, την επόμενη ανάσα, την επόμενη σκουπισιά.

Finally,

Και ξαφνικά βλέπεις πως βήμα βήμα έχεις σκουπίσει ολόκληρο τον δρόμο.

Translated roughly, “You know Momo… it’s like this: sometimes you have ahead of you a very long road. You think about how long it is, you think that you will never manage it. (Later) It doesn’t do to think of the entire road, understand? You must think only of the next step, the next breath, the next sweep. (Finally) And suddenly you see that step by step you have swept the entire road.

I think this can be applied to any road. Including the road to learning Greek. If you only look at the end of the road, in this case fluency, you might think you will never make it. But if you just concentrate on each step, eventually you can look back and see the progress you made.

• Watch / read / listen to content at or just above your level
• Make achievable, short term goals
• Breathe – enjoy the process
• Every now and then look back and see how much progress you have made!
