Modern Greek Learning Journey

Clozemaster

I’ve been trying out Clozemaster as a means of daily review. So far, after five days of use, it seems promising!

How Does Clozemaster Work?

Clozemaster uses cloze sentences to help you review. What’s a cloze sentence? It is a sentence with a missing word that needs to be filled in so that it will be complete. With the free version of Clozemaster, you get 30 cloze sentences per day. There’s also a paid version that has an unlimited number of sentences per day.

Clozemaster’s Features

So, what are the features that make it promising as a great review activity?

10 reasons I like Clozemaster (free version) so far are:

  1. The sentences I have to read and complete are ones I could use in real life.
  2. There are two modes of input – typing the answer or choosing the answer from a grid.
  3. It is a great way to practice spelling and the placement of accents. When using the typing mode, if you type the wrong letter or forget the accent, the letter displays as red rather than green so you can correct it.
  4. No advertisements. At least not that I’m aware of.
  5. English translation of the Greek sentence is provided, but the translation is unobtrusive so I can read the Greek sentence and try to figure out the answer before looking at the English.
  6. The user has some control over frequency of word repetition. One of the options is to mark a sentence as “known” at which time the repetition would come in the year 2100!! Pretty sure I won’t see that one again.
  7. The program uses spaced repetition. It feeds you the sentences/ words for which you had a mistake more frequently than the ones you get correct. This way it really targets what you don’t know.
  8. I was able to turn off the notifications about “leveling up.” I’m so happy about this feature! I don’t really care about my level in Clozemaster.
  9. The display board is straight forward and easy to use.
  10. There are lots of user controls. You can decide if you want hints, spelling help, daily reminders and more.

Three other things to note:

First, it looks like Clozemaster would be good for the upper beginner level and up. I’m not sure how it would work for a complete beginner as it seems to start by assuming that the user has some ability to read and type in Greek. I’ve only tried the “Fluency Fast Track,” so I can’t comment on the other “track” options.

Second, you need to have the ability to type with Greek letters to use the program.

Third, the paid version has unlimited number of sentences per day, more controls, grammar help, and access to cloze reading texts among other things.
