Modern Greek Learning Journey

Τζατζίκι

Let me just say that I think tζατζίκι είναι πεντανόστιμο! (tzatziki is really delicious). Every time I have the chance to eat Greek food, I make sure to order something that includes this tasty sauce. Finally, I decided I needed to learn how to make tzatziki rather than waiting to go to a Greek restaurant. Making tzatziki was also a great opportunity to practice Greek by using a recipe written in the language.

Here’s how it went:

I used this recipe from Akis Petretzikis website. The recipe was rated as εύκολο (easy) and was estimated to take 15 minutes. Happily, it lived up to both of these promises. It tasted great too! A little chopping, grating, stirring and measuring was all that was required. I think anyone could make this recipe.

After reading the recipe and watching the video, I was ready to make tzatziki. I followed the ingredients exactly, but altered the procedure a bit.

To start off, I couldn’t find a grater. Honestly, I don’t know if I even own a grater. So, I just cut the cucumber up and used the electric chopper. It worked like a charm.

The other step I did differently was that I didn’t use a mortar and pestle for the garlic, but just finely chopped it and squished it a little with the back of a spoon and then mixed it with the oil.

The end result was super tasty, served with fresh vegetables. That’s what I call a win-win situation – Greek language practice and tasty tzatziki!
