Modern Greek Learning Journey

10 More Ways to Learn Greek

There are so many ways to learn a language, but learning as a social experience is one of my favorites! My top three from this list? Get a tutor, join a book group and visit Greece!

If you don’t have access to learning in a social setting, try writing practice dialogues or thinking in Greek (numbers 3 and 4 in the list). Create your own social experience in your mind!

  1. Get a tutor – Find a tutor that fits your style and budget. Here are some questions to consider when choosing a tutor. How often do you want to meet? How long should each lesson be? What are your goals? Are you interested in grammar, conversation, test prep or a combo of topics? Do you want your lessons conducted mostly in Greek or in English or in another language?
  2. Try Language Transfer Greek – A Greek course with explanations of words, grammar and more. You can do the course by just listening, but it is probably most effective if you can pause the audio and attempt to answer the instructor’s questions before they are answered for you.
  3. Write practice dialogues – Have an opportunity to speak with a native Greek speaker? Write a practice dialogue ahead of time, anticipating potential questions and responses. For example, are you going out to buy produce? What items do you want to buy? How much of each item? How do you ask about the prices? How do you politely start and end the conversation? Being prepared is a great confidence booster!
  4. Think in Greek – Have 5 minutes!? Look around and think of the Greek words for everything you can see.  If you don’t know what the name of an object is, look it up after the 5 minutes.  Progress to making sentences. Did you join a conversation group? Spend 5 minutes before the meeting thinking about something you can say in Greek.
  5. Use Duolingo – Duolingo is a go-to app for many learners.
  6. Go to Greece – So many opportunities to practice the language! Plus so many cool places to visit. Rhodes and Athens are two of my favorites.
  7. Attend an immersion camp – It’s on my bucket list!
  8. Join a book group – Reading and discussing a book with a group is both fun and educational. Learning new words in the context of a story can be very effective.
  9. Join a Facebook group -Have a question about Greek? Join one or more groups and maybe your fellow learners can help you out.
  10. Listen to music – Try the Radio Garden app, where you can listen to music from all over the world. For song suggestions, watch the Easy Greek YouTube short “A Greek Song For Beginners“. Easy Greek episode 177, “Greek Songs For If You’ve Never Listened to Greek Music“, also has some great suggestions. Check the comments on that episode because Easy Greek has included a link to a YouTube playlist of all the songs suggested in the episode.
